Northeast Georgia Health System challenged Turner to develop innovative approaches and achieve results through the most economical means. The Turner team earmarked $3.5 million of the budget for innovative items. Based on LEED HC points, this list included over 100 items that were analyzed on multiple levels, including priority to NGHS, cost, ROI, and project design impacts. Turner used prefabricated elements for patient room bathroom pods and headwalls to shorten the schedule and control quality. The result was 96 prefabricated bathroom pods and headwalls and a one-month schedule reduction. In addition, the project included a Geothermal Ground Source Heat Pump system in lieu of a legacy Central Energy Plant as part of the mechanical system. Turner drilled five hundred-foot geothermal wells outside the hospital’s expansion areas. These 500-foot wells circulate water to create renewable energy to heat and cool the hospital. These innovative sustainability practices are only a few implemented at the hospital, enabling the NGMC project to be completed two months ahead of schedule and to carry the distinction of being the first hospital in Georgia to achieve Gold Level LEED Healthcare Certification.
