Harvard University, Allston Science & Engineering Complex

State-of-the-Art Research Facility For Harvard

This new 500,000+ sq. ft. Science and Engineering Complex on Harvard’s Allston campus houses six floors of state-of-the-art research facilities, including active learning labs, maker space, faculty labs, vivarium facilities, community space and a cafe. Designed by Behnisch Architekten, the complex is highly sustainable and resilient, with features such as a triple glazed façade with integrated sun-shading, reclaimed wood floors, a central open atrium, green roofs, and vibrant outdoor spaces.

The facility achieved LEED Platinum certification, and Living Building Challenge Petal Certification, making the facility one of the healthiest, most sustainable, and energy-efficient laboratories in the world. A specially designed fin structure on the facade uses tilted and curved shading panels to divert sunlight on the south side of the building and the wings, keeping the facility cool in summer months. Chilled beams are also being used to control the building’s temperature.
