The Energy Production and Infrastructure Center project, commonly known as EPIC is a 200,000 sq. ft. science and research building is located in UNC Charlotte's Research Institute campus. It provides education and applied research opportunities to students with energy-related interests.
This LEED Gold certified building houses classrooms, lecture halls, conference rooms, a clean room, offices, and wet and dry laboratories for electrical, civil, environmental and computer research related to energy and energy delivery infrastructure. The building includes a one of a kind structures lab with a 32' high "strong wall" for material testing and research and a smart grid laboratory and accommodate undergraduate as well as graduate teaching. Complex “chilled beam” technology along with other aggressive energy conservation measures were utilized in the building.The project also included expansion of a regional utility plant and the extension of an existing road to a signalized intersection.
