Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Independence Division

A Sustainable Patrol Station for the Independence Division of Charlotte

The new 14,500 sq. ft. patrol station houses office and training spaces for the division. The design and location of facility was driven by CMPD’s mission to strengthen its connectivity with the community. The two-story facility includes administrative offices, interview and victim conference rooms, a fitness area, spacious locker room facilities, a private room for new mothers, a rooftop dining area, and a designated parking area. The project also included the construction of a new connector street and sidewalks to the neighborhood allowing for greater connectivity in the area.

Enabling CMPD to strengthen its relationship with the community

The two-story facility includes administrative offices, interview and victim conference rooms, a fitness area, spacious locker room facilities, a private room for new mothers, a rooftop dining area , and a designated parking area. The project also included the construction of a new connector street and sidewalks to the neighborhood allowing for greater connectivity in the area.

The LEED Silver certified building also considers its impacts on the natural environment. Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) in the exterior envelope are estimated to reduce the energy required for heating by 44 percent and cooling by 32 percent, while strengthening the structure and increasing its resiliency. Bullet-resistant glazing and partitions in the public lobby provide an additional layer of protection.

In addition to the ICFs, sustainable design features include 25 geothermal wells under the parking lots, electric vehicle charging stations, a solar ready roof, LED lighting, occupancy sensors, and green building signage that was installed to educate occupants on the project’s commitment to sustainability.  Enhanced, monitoring based, and envelope commissioning services were implemented during and after construction to further support building performance efforts.
