DSGN Associates
Vickery Meadow is one of Dallas's densest, multicultural neighborhoods, with an ethnically diverse, economically challenged population of immigrants and refugees speaking over 56 languages. The design combines a traditional library approach with 21st-century technologies to create a community hub with the spaces and resources to act as a classroom, a youth center with cutting-edge technology, a job training facility, and a town plaza for its vibrant community.
The library’s new ellipse space, clean lines, and excellent material palette betray the Architect’s modern sensibility and preservation of midcentury architecture in Dallas and nationally. The facility aims for a high level of sustainability, as it was designed to be 100 percent carbon neutral, with solar voltaic panels on the roof providing 33 percent of its power.
Within this neighborhood that embraces cultural diversity, the new branch library offers a welcoming landscape design with thoughtful programming to provide opportunities for area residents to gather and an ideal location for community events. The library also includes a children’s play space with a climbing structure and an amenity that community members requested during planning sessions – children are the #1 priority, with the elementary and middle school directly across the street.
