Virtual Design & Construction
Initially opened in 1882 during formal racial segregation in the United States, the school was Fort Worth’s first school for African American students. In 1910, the school relocated to the current site, and significant additions to the building were completed in the 1930s and 1950s. The building eventually closed in 1973 and fell into disrepair. Portions of the campus re-opened as an elementary school in 1998, primarily to serve the Butler Place Housing Project students. When looking for a site to house the district’s first Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and Visual & Performing Arts (VPA) campus, I.M. Terrell was suggested due to its central location within the City of Fort Worth and the opportunity to revitalize an essential landmark in FWISD history.
The new stand-alone two-story Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) building addition includes a 900-seat performance hall, choir room, piano lab, black box theater, band hall, stage set construction lab, and green room. The scope also included renovating two historically significant buildings and transforming existing spaces into 21st-century classrooms, science labs, computer labs, STEM maker spaces, and collaborative learning areas. Delivering a 21st-century campus ready to support the needs of future STEM and VPA students was the principal goal of this high-profile project.
The construction of I.M. Terrell Academy for STEM and VPA was the first in the Fort Worth Independent School District. This project has become an iconic showpiece in the district. The revitalization of this school is spurring the development and revitalization of the surrounding area. The success of this project is a testament to the entire team's hard work.
