A monument to student life and leadership, the Student Union Expansion maintains the welcoming campus atmosphere at Stanislaus State. The building contains conference rooms, ballrooms, retail space, student lounge and study, administration, restaurant and a theater. The project is located in the center of campus and has a direct connection to the cafeteria building.
Opportunities were explored to activate underutilized programs and outdoor areas. An example of that is the Warrior Steps which was originally programmed as a space for weekly movie nights and student production. By opening the space up and locating it at the front of the building, students can use it during the day as a place to meet, relax, study, or just to hang out. By so doing, it becomes a forum where chance encounters and ideas can be born. In addition, the stage opens out onto the lawn, where we have created a berm as an informal seating area. This way, the stage serves both the indoor forum as well as the outdoor performance space.
