Kansas' Largest Economic Development Project: A 5.5 Million Sq. Ft. Lithium-Ion Battery Factory Powering Panasonic’s Green Future

Turner is providing construction management services for the 5,500,000 sq. ft., two-story lithium-ion battery assembly factory on the 300-acre Astra Industrial Park (formerly the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant).The project includes Building Shell and Wing 1 MEP fit-out. This project is a 50/50 Joint Venture and represents the largest economic development project in Kansas’ history.​

The project swiftly formed a CM team to handle pre-purchased steel, coordinate site development, and expedite crucial MEP equipment. They efficiently managed steel deliveries and inventory, saving costs through re-bidding and securing the erection package. Turner’s SourceBlue team procured MEP equipment early, ensuring timely delivery by estimating quantities and sizes, securing manufacturers and production slots. Their proactive approach enabled immediate engagement, cohesive teamwork, and an accelerated start, meeting milestones and delivering the Core & Shell and Wing 1 Fitout GMP packages for a successful project launch.​

The battery manufacturing facility is a critical part of Panasonic’s investment in the United States to expand EV battery production capacity. This project creates new jobs with competitive wages and will help drive the economy and manufacturing in the De Soto region, and across Kansas and the United States. It also will support the Panasonic Group’s commitment to reduce global carbon emissions. The factory is a demonstration of the Panasonic Group’s Green IMPACT initiative, which is aimed at reducing the company’s CO2 emission to virtually net-zero by 2030 and contributing to 300 million tons in avoided emissions by 2050.
