Turner provided preconstruction and construction management services for Austin Peay State University’s new 46,000-sq. ft. Art and Design Building and renovation of the existing 60,000-sq. ft. Trahern Building.
The Department of Art and Design and the Department of Theater had outgrown the Trahern Building, which had housed the departments for decades. The facility was no longer adequate in size or functionality and the departments needed a more specialized and functional space to support their programs.
The new Art and Design Building includes general-purpose classrooms, a multi-function room, art studios, a photographic studio, a general art gallery, a student gallery, and faculty office space. The two-story steel frame building features a masonry exterior with ribbon windows and an industrial-style interior with polished concrete floors, exposed ceilings, and wood ceilings with track lighting.
The Trahern Building renovation included mechanical systems upgrades, exterior updates, and conversion of the old Trahern gallery into a black-box theatre for small, experimental productions. The building largely houses the Department of Theatre and Dance, with ceramics and sculpture housed in the facility as well.
