A High-Tech Facility for the Coming Generations of Midshipmen

The Hopper Hall Project at the United States Naval Academy provided a new Center for Cyber Security Studies (CCSS) building in Annapolis Maryland. THe CCSS building is a multi-story acadmic facility addressing space needs for the cyber-related curricula and science-technology-engineering-mathematics (STEM) fields. The academic building is 206,400 sq. ft. of academic space dedicated to the education of midshipmen in all areas of cyber welfare. The building houses the newly established CCSS, as well as three (3) existing academic departments: Weapons and systems engineering, electrical and computer engineering, as well as computer sciences. Upon completion, the project achieved LEED Silver Certification. This project was the first academic building to be constructed at the Naval Academy in over 40 years. 

All buildings were constructed to ATFP standards, which were significant due to limited stand-off distances and proximity to a public waterway. As a result, the majority of the exterior was precast and blast protected glass, with a significant amount of mansonry interior and support walls. The academic building consists of multiple lab spaces. The labs include computer and cyber engineering, wireless network systems, observatories, weapons and vehicle engineering and technologies, and a surf pool. In addition, the facility includes a large event space with terraces that overlook the Severn River.
