This 700,000 sq. ft. medical research facility was the first phase of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s South Campus. The South Campus project was an extension of the site preparation phase also performed by Turner.

Phase I involved the construction of a four-story steel frame building with an ancillary Central Utilities Plant capable of supporting the initial fit-out spaces that were included in Phase II. A shared, below-ground link, Phase I houses support functions, laboratories, and a vivarium. Phase I achieved LEED® Silver Certification.

Phase II of the  facility was the construction of a 12-story steel frame tower atop the existing and occupied four-story Phase I structure. Early bid packages and design assist for steel and envelope, along with a fast track design assist process, commenced prior to issuance of the GMP.

The envelope of the tower is a curved and jutting modular curtain wall façade made of unitized aluminum and glass units textured with terra cotta rain screen and applied aluminum components. The initial build-out of the tower housed three floors of general office and conference spaces, four floors of research laboratories, and a two-story mechanical/electrical floor. The structure, facade, vertical transportation, mechanical, and electrical systems can be expanded in the future to 27 stories through phased construction. Phase II achieved LEED® Gold Certification.
