The new Paluxy Hall provides Northeast Lakeview College a new space for STEM learning. The two separate wings of the building were designed with specific functions in mind. The single-story wing is dedicated to all chemistry, geology, and physics labs, as well as a tutorial center. The three-story wing houses computer labs, a theatre-style classroom, a flexible classroom, faculty offices, a student breakroom, and the large flexible multi-purpose event space.
Designed and built with the students in mind, this facility will allow Northeast Lakeview College to expand its course offerings and provide access for more students to pursue high-demand areas of study in STEM.
The final appearance of the building is a modern, clean look that provides an environmentally conscious, safe, and comfortable space to optimize students and staff’s performance. To strengthen the end user’s connection to the natural environment, the building’s final aesthetic integrates natural materials, artwork, large windows, and vegetation. The majority of the chosen artwork was created by local artists from San Antonio, along with some student artwork. To be considered for the sculpture in front of the building, local artists had to submit their designs. The large windows and balconies overlook the reservoir the campus is centered around. Modular walls were used on the 3rd floor to accommodate flexible office and event space. The structure is also “futureproofed,” making it simple to integrate new office system technology.
The Paluxy Hall project team was fundamentally committed to safety. Liberty Mutual’s Award for Outstanding Safety Performance for 2022 was given to the team. The project’s DART rate was .66 and its total manhours acquired were 301,365, earning it the second-highest ranking according to DART qualifying rates! This accomplishment is a clear example of Active Caring in action. The project team at Paluxy Hall developed a culture where all people feel they are part of something extraordinary by our staff managing risk, creating a safe environment, and demonstrating the highest standard of care for each other.
This phenomenal outcome of the Paluxy Hall project was due to the project team creating the RIGHT environment on the project. The team showed respect to all parties who were directly and indirectly involved with the project, and were inclusive of the design team, Paluxy Hall team, and all subcontractors.
Being on a busy campus, coordination with Northeast Lakeview College, and any other parties impacted by construction was essential. Barricades and site signage were required to keep workers and students informed of everyday activities and to maintain their alertness. QR codes were placed throughout the jobsite to provide a platform for continuous improvements. As suggestions were received, an effort to improve these ideas was implemented to ensure the team knew that feedback was heard, and actions were put in place.
