Advancing Cancer Prevention Through Science

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Public Health Sciences (PHS) division is devoted to cancer prevention research. With seven floors -- five above ground and two below -- the 372,000 sq. ft. structure is the sixth and largest facility to be built on the 14-acre Hutchinson Center campus. This office building serves the bio-statistical, epidemiological, and prevention research conducted at the Center. The facility includes a lab space and a 450-stall underground parking garage. The Public Health Sciences Building renamed the Robert M. Arnold Building, is a LEED-certified project. Green features include the drainage system, designed to prevent groundwater from infiltrating the foundation, which sits below the water table; the system will collect the water and use it to irrigate the grounds. Another green feature is the lighting system, which saves energy by automatically adjusting lights according to whatever natural light is available and by turning lights off if a room is unoccupied.
