100 Years of Healthcare Project Highlight: Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Campus

2025 marks a century of healthcare construction for Turner. Our story is one of service, innovation, and impact. What makes this milestone special is the difference our people make in the lives of others. Over the past 100 years, our people have delivered medical facilities that support the ever-evolving needs of patients, healthcare professionals, and communities. We are happy to highlight healthcare projects that showcase the work of our people. 

Turner is proud to highlight the 32,000-square-foot Radiation Oncology Treatment Center for Kaiser Permanente in Bellflower, California. This project marks Turner’s second collaboration on the Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Campus. The center features advanced oncology and imaging facilities that offer patients an uplifting, serene, and positive care experience. The Bellflower facility brings essential care to residents in the Downey and South Bay service area, greatly reducing the need for long-distance travel. 

The radiation Oncology Center houses advanced linear accelerators for precision cancer treatment. Adjacent to this structure is the Imaging Building that hosts MRI machines and associated support spaces. The facility also includes a CT scan room, offices, and exam rooms, all built to provide a calming and healing atmosphere for cancer care patients.  

Designed and built as a symbol for hope, the building’s exterior was crafted to create a gentle and optimistic atmosphere. The radiused curtain wall incorporates a fritted glass pattern inspired by the local ‘Belle-fleur’ apple tree, grounding the structure in the Bellflower community and serving as a visual representation of resilience and healing. 

A strong focus on energy efficiency and resource conservation was integrated throughout the project, earning the facility LEED Gold certification. The building functions as an all-electric specialty medical office. Solar study analysis was conducted to optimize building orientation, reduce energy loads, and maximize natural light. Large windows and glass sliding doors further decrease reliance on indoor lighting, while sensors efficiently manage energy usage based on occupancy levels. 

To promote water conservation, landscaping incorporates drought-resistant plants and subsurface irrigation systems that conserve approximately 104,000 gallons of water per month, the equivalent of the monthly water usage for 12 homes. Throughout the construction process, Turner conducted monitoring of water and electrical meters, enabling proactive adjustments to minimize consumption. These sustainability efforts underscore Turner’s commitment to resource conservation and building a healthier, more sustainable future for the Bellflower community.

The Radiation Oncology Treatment Center stands as a testament to Turner’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainability. By blending advanced medical technology with thoughtful design and environmental conscious construction, the project elevates healthcare access and stands as a lasting symbol of hope for patients and their families.
