California State University, Chico Completes Programming Workshops for Butte Hall Replacement Projec

Sacramento, CA - The Design-Build Butte Hall Replacement project is well under way as California State University (CSU) Chico completes Programming Workshops, a first milestone for Turner Construction/AC Martin (Turner+AC Martin) following award of collaborative design-build contract.

The Butte Hall Replacement Project includes design and construction of a new multi-story academic building that will replace functions currently housed in Butte Hall. The intent of the new project is to incorporate active learning classrooms, lecture rooms, administrative and faculty offices, conference rooms, and breakout areas.

Butte Hall was constructed in 1972 and is one of the primary academic buildings at Chico State, housing the majority of the classrooms, administrative space, and faculty offices for the College of Behavioral and Social Science (BSS).

“This project provides us an opportunity to transform the east end of the Chico State campus core by creating a new, inviting building,” said Mike Guzzi, CSU Chico Associate Vice President of Facilities and Capital Projects. “This project will also allow us the opportunity to bring more of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences together in one state-of-the-art building to facilitate collaboration amongst the college.”

The Turner + AC Martin team recently completed programming and is in the process of testing several building designs. The proposed designs will make the most of the unique opportunities offered by the site; adjacency to Chico Creek, the Bidwell Bowl, and Downtown Chico beg for a building that is welcoming from all directions and provides students and staff views of its striking surroundings. The building will also be designed to meet Net Zero Energy (NZE) standards.

“The Turner + AC Martin team couldn’t be more excited with the opportunity to work with Chico State on this project,” said Tim Blood, Design Manager. “The Original Butte Hall was, for decades, the workhorse of the Chico State Campus. It is a tremendous honor and responsibility that we have to design and build that old work-horse’s replacement. The new Butte Hall will be a tremendous upgrade that will serve Chico State’s students and staff for decades to come.”

The $76 million building is expected to break ground in Summer 2022 and open for instruction in the fall of 2024.
