Building Futures One Paw at a Time: Meet Turner, the Guide Dog in Training

Turner the puppy has joined the Turner Construction team in Oakville, not just as a furry friend on-site but as a future service dog in training for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. With a unique upbringing that includes socializing on a busy construction site, Turner is preparing to change someone’s life, embodying Turner Construction’s commitment to building a better, more accessible future.

Meet “Turner” the Pup: Turner Construction’s Furry Ambassador

At the Dog Guide's project site in Oakville, Ontario, one of the newest and most beloved team members stands on four paws: meet Turner the pup! Born on April 23, 2024, Turner is an adorable, energetic puppy adopted by the team. She is part of an inspiring journey as both a team member and a future service dog in training. Turner, a foster puppy for Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG), spends her days at the construction site, experiencing the sights and sounds of an active workplace to prepare her for her future role.

Turner’s schedule is unique—she alternates between two loving caregivers each week, spending time with Lara one week and Zafer the next. This shared responsibility ensures she is well-socialized and comfortable in different environments. Turner’s favorite toy on-site? A simple piece of wood she loves to carry around. Her current favorite activity is, unsurprisingly, eating treats! Despite her cheerful demeanor, Turner dislikes being left alone, preferring to stay close to the crew.

Turner’s Training Journey

Right now, Turner is learning the basics: fundamentals like calm behavior, walking slowly on a leash, and being comfortable around different people and machinery. These initial skills are essential for her development as a confident guide dog. Turner is expected to begin her formal training when she is around 15 months old, in July 2025.

Building for a Cause: Lions Foundation Dog Guide Training Facility

Turner Construction is honored to be building the future home of the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides National Training Centre in Oakville. Scheduled for completion in 2026, the 89,000-square-foot facility will serve as a state-of-the-art training space where puppies like Turner will become life-changing companions for people in need. The facility will feature training rooms, 35 guest bedrooms for clients and families, and both indoor and outdoor spaces dedicated to advanced dog guide training.

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides: Changing Lives

Founded in the 1980s, the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG) is a charitable organization providing life-transforming dog guides at no cost to Canadians with disabilities. LFCDG covers a broad range of needs through seven specialized dog guide programs:

  1. Canine Vision – Assists individuals who are visually impaired.
  2. Hearing – Alerts individuals with hearing impairments to essential sounds.
  3. Service – Supports people with physical disabilities by performing tasks like opening doors.
  4. Seizure Response – Provides assistance for those with epilepsy by sensing oncoming seizures.
  5. Autism Assistance – Helps children with autism engage socially and manage stress.
  6. Diabetic Alert – Monitors blood sugar changes in people with diabetes.
  7. Facility Support – Aids therapy settings such as hospitals and schools.

Each dog guide requires approximately $35,000 to breed, train, and place—a cost entirely covered through donations, as LFCDG receives no government support. Fundraisers like the annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides help sustain these valuable programs.

Turner’s Future: A Guide Dog in the Making

Turner’s journey with Turner Construction goes beyond her time on-site. Her early exposure to various environments, coupled with the loving care from the team, is setting her up for success as a service dog. Once her socialization period is complete, Turner will advance to formal training in July 2025. The experience she gains at the construction site, surrounded by new faces and challenges, will prepare her for a life of service, giving someone the freedom to navigate their world with greater independence and confidence.

Through the collective efforts of Turner Construction and the dedication of organizations like LFCDG, Turner the pup is well on her way to becoming a vital companion for someone in need—an embodiment of the power of community and construction in building a brighter, more accessible future.
