Repurposing a space for STEM learning

Repurposing a space for STEM learning

For more than two decades, the Excellence Without Excuse (E-WE Lab) Community Computer Arts Lab & Learning Center provided access to technology and tutoring for youth in the Town of Eatonville, the oldest black-incorporated municipality in the United States.

Grateful & proud of the community partnership

But in 2020 COVID-19 forced the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community, Inc. (P.E.C.) to close the E-WE Lab’s doors.

“We recognized immediately a major challenge facing us -- how to get the kids back after such a long time away,” said, N. Y. Nathiri, Executive Director, P.E.C. “To accomplish this meant presenting a new E-WE Lab, one that had been reimagined, repurposed, and renovated.”

Turner’s Orlando Mosaic Employee Resource Group recognized the opportunity to revitalize the STEM space, and in partnership with KMF Architects for design services, reimagined the Lab. More than 30 Turner Orlando employees volunteered time during the company’s Founders’ Month, providing labor and materials for flooring, brightly colored walls, shelving, furniture, 16 computer stations, and construction of a sound-proof recording studio.  At the end of the month, the Lab held its grand re-opening – in time for summer youth programming and the start of its year-round academic support – in its reimagined space.

“Thanks to Turner, P.E.C. has been able to meet this major challenge,” said N. Y. “We now have a beautifully renovated facility. We are grateful and proud of the community partnership this project represents.”
