Baltimore, Maryland – The Maryland chapter of the US Green Building Council Recently recognized Turner’s Exelon Baltimore Headquarters project with their Wintergreen Award for Excellence in Green Building.
At 15 stories and 443,000 square feet, the fit out is the largest LEED project in the city and among the top 10 largest Platinum certified projects in the country.
“The LEED submission process went very smoothly with our team and subcontractors,” said Matt Souders, Turner project manager, also sharing the achievement with Turner’s tri-venture partners Commercial Group and Mahogany, Inc., and adding that the tight, eight-month schedule would not have been possible to meet without their contributions. “Also, having a LEED consultant on the Turner team was extremely helpful. With their focus and experience, we were able to get a response from the USGBC within a month of submission, accepting 82 credits.”
Conferred in a ceremony on the 10th floor of the Exelon Tower, the Wintergreen Award celebrates, promotes and recognizes excellence in high performance, healthy design and building, environmental stewardship and community impact, and serves to highlight the green building initiatives and achievements of the USGBC Maryland community.
In addition to offices and support areas, the primary functional area of includes a 60,000 square-foot trading floor for 650 traders, supporting the wholesale energy trading operations of Exelon’s Constellation business unit. The light-flooded space features an open floor plan with 360 degrees of full height window lines and a number of green features. Efficient LED lights use half as much energy as traditional fixtures. A photovoltaic array offsets energy use. And recycled and reclaimed wood from Baltimore row houses, provided by a local salvage and reuse organization Humanim, adds a bit of brushed-up local history to elevator lobbies and trading floor piers. Additionally, the team diverted more than 90% of all construction waste from landfills.
