The 85 Sky Tower is an 87-storey, structural steel high rise consisting of offices, a hotel and retail facilities. It is Kaohsiung’s tallest tower and one of the tallest buildings in the world. The base of the high rise, out of which an additional tower element projects, was designed with to be tall in order to accommodate tunnel features on the lower levels of the building. Situated approximately 300 meters from the harbor, the slurry wall construction consists of 100 panels, 44.5 meters deep and 447.6 meters in perimeter, with a total volume of 19,918 cubic meters. High performance concrete was employed for the first time in Taiwan for this project and can withstand 8,000 psi. Internally, the building was constructed around eight different cores, allowing easy access among the building’s accommodations, lounges, shopping areas and office space. Each of these four areas of the building are also independent, with its own gateway extending upward toward the sky lobby.
