Turner provided construction management services for the construction and full interior fit-out of the East River Science Park East Tower, an 870,000 sq. ft. research and development facility located in the center of New York City's academic and medical science corridor. The site was set on top of uneven bedrock that sloped from 175 feet below the foundation at the east end to 20 feet below at the west end, requiring steel H piles to be drilled into the bedrock at varying depths and capped to create structural support.
The building's close proximity to the river made waterproofing a constant concern. To ensure a water tight foundation, two slabs were poured on top of the piles. The first layer was a mud slab that included a sheet waterproofing proofing system. The second layer was an 18'' concrete slab sealed to reduce porosity while keeping water out.
