American Institute of Architects (AIA) Global Campus for Architecture & Design

The American Institute of Architects Headquarters renewal reflects the mission and influence of the nation’s largest network of architecture professionals. Located at 1735 New York Avenue NW in Washington, DC, the project transforms AIA’s 1973, 180,000 square foot headquarters into a forward-looking, flexible workplace that strengthens engagement with members and the broader community.

Rather than pursuing new construction, AIA chose to rehabilitate its existing seven-story building, significantly reducing embodied carbon and demonstrating leadership in sustainable stewardship. The comprehensive renovation modernizes workspaces, enhances collaboration and transparency, and improves building performance while preserving the architectural legacy of the original structure.

As a once-in-a-generation investment, the renewed headquarters serves as a living model of adaptive reuse and design excellence, aligning AIA’s physical environment with its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the future of the profession.
