Turner served as a construction consultant with responsibilities to oversee the master schedule, procurement and installation of baggage handling systems, a laser aircraft docking guidance system, check-in counters, transfer counters, gates with passenger boarding bridges, elevators, escalators, and moving walkways. Atatürk Airport is Turner’s first airport terminal in Europe. This international terminal and parking facility comprises a three-story, 11 million square feet, reinforced concrete and steel structure with a capacity for 14 million passengers, and a five-story car park for over 7,000 vehicles.
After the devastating earthquake that took place in Turkey in August 1999, structural designs were modified and friction pendulum bearings were installed on all departure level column heads, allowing the entire roof to move freely and readily dissipate any forces emanating from an earthquake. Pneumatic lock-up devices were provided for the structural steel roof space frame, allowing for normal thermal expansion, while unitizing the entire space frame in the event of an earthquake. Even with these additional challenges, the project was completed in 24 months, eight months ahead of the contract's stipulated completion date.
