Wellesley College, Science Center Renovation and Expansion

State-of-the-Art Science Facility for Wellesley College

The Wellesley 2025 plan included the replacement of the Sage Hall science building with a new 88,690 sq. ft. academic building, and the preservation and adaptive reuse of the Science Center L and E Wing to create a state-of-the-art science facility. The new academic building contains offices, classrooms, and lab programs. This project has transformed the existing facilities, while preserving the historic integrity of the buildings and campus. The Science Center encompasses four existing structures, including a complex of greenhouses, Sage Hall, the L Wing addition that includes laboratories, a vivarium, an atrium, and the E-Wing classrooms and offices. This building received LEED Platinum certification.

Historic Preservation & Mass Timber Features

While the scope for the new science center called for the demolition of the original building, the team was tasked with the preservation of one central wall, the ‘Sage Wall.’ The College’s Conservation Management Group deemed the wall to have significant historical and architectural relevance and was preserved in order to maintain the space’s historical integrity.

Other remarkable aspects of the project include the significant use of Mass Timber and the collaboration with Turner Self-Perform (SPO).
