Completed in 2009, Kroon Hall is Yale's first LEED Platinum building and serves as the School of the Environment's central hub of activity. This benchmark model of sustainability included the construction of the new building as well as the necesssary Science Hill utility relocations and improvements on the site.
One of the most noteworthy “green” features of Kroon Hall is the building’s energy efficiency. It exceeds ASHRAE standards by 60%. Another feature of Kroon is the gray water system. Rain water is collected off the roof and on the site and funneled into a large holding tank and runs slowly through a water feature on the site. The water feature has the dual purpose; it’s an exquisite gathering place for students, and the aquatic plants in the water feature filter out contaminants that may be found in the rain water.
In addition to conventionally procured FSC lumber, much of the red oak used throughout the project for the extensive interior wall paneling came from Yale’s own FSC forests located in Northwestern Connecticut.
