The University of Texas at Dallas Brain Performance Institute (BPI) is a 62,000 sq. ft. research facility. It is the headquarters of what is said to be the world’s first institute focused on scientifically based programs aimed at increasing brain performance, enhancing brain resilience, and inciting brain regeneration to the public. The building is home to researchers who will translate rapidly emerging scientific brain discoveries to build and regain healthy brain function as quickly as possible.
The three-story, wraparound elliptical glass facade features communal and private areas and natural light. Sunshades provide shade and sound-dampening; all office desks are standing desks to promote better brain function. The glass neurons were designed by artist David Gappa, who also created an “educational synapse glass ceiling” in one of the building’s rooms shaped like an ellipse, representing the front lobe of the brain.
Other spaces include training spaces, an internet cafe, and several touchdown workspaces to accommodate patients, family members, and visitors. The rectangular building includes two MRI classrooms, collaborative and private work areas, and administrative offices. One key component is the Warrior Lounge, designed with valuable input from many veterans treated for traumatic brain injuries. Other unique elements include a Virtual Reality lab and Teleprescence room, which allows interactive training sessions to be broadcast worldwide.
