As part of the Houston ISD 2012 bond issue, the 195,000 sq. ft. middle school was designed and built to accommodate more than 1,300 students. The new three-story facility includes a total of 40 learning centers, science laboratories, two gymnasiums with full size basketball courts and a cafeteria, all surrounding a central formal theater. “This building represents our investment in this community and the future of our students in the Hiram Clarke neighborhood,” HISD Board of Education Trustee, Wanda Adams, said. “The new Lawson Middle School will have a huge impact on this community for generations to come.”
With a history rich in the arts, the new LEED accredited facility also includes visual and fine arts, theater arts, and vocal and instrumental music programs. With the arts department serving as the central hub of the school, the building also includes a complete modern black box theatre and an auditorium to compliment and support student performances.
