Prior to the opening of the Children's Village, pediatric specialty medical services for the healthcare system were spread between several different locations throughout Long Beach. Filling a need in the community to create a place that supports a collaborative, efficient model of care; the new building brings together thirty-six specialty pediatric clinics under one roof. The four-story, LEED Gold certified building now allows families to receive all their care needs in a single location. In addition, families also have access to a pharmacy, laboratory, imaging services, indoor and outdoor gyms for various age groups, a daycare, and a family resource and education center.
The entire project was developed with lean concepts: using pull planning across the entire design-build team and big room team coordination meetings. Taking the planning to the next step, the design-build team crafted full-sized mockups of nearly all treatment spaces within an outdoor tent. This process enabled providers, nurses, administrators and patient families to provide valuable feedback before construction commenced on the healthcare center. Armed with this knowledge and a collaborative environment, the team incorporated several recommendations to deliver a facility that the community immediately embraced.
