The South of Main or “SoMa” Development spans multiple parcels across 10 acres of land in Kendall Square with the creation of three new buildings, underground parking, and ample green spaces. Site 4 is a 500,000 sq. ft., 30-story, mixed-use facility for MIT. The building includes 455 apartments, amenities, admissions, offices, and childcare. Construction involved the historic renovation of two existing buildings, construction of a new podium and tower, major structural renovations, and exterior restorations.
From the foundation to Level 6, the structure is steel encased in concrete; beyond Level 6, the structure is cast-in-place concrete, with a 45’ cantilever on the south elevation. The new portion of the façade is a mix of pre-fabricated mega panels and curtain wall. The existing building’s brick façade was preserved and restored. This new tower is the tallest building in Cambridge. This building received LEED Gold certification.
