The Hospital for Special Surgery, Special Tissue Laboratory

Turner provided the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) with general contracting services for the build-out of a special tissue culture laboratory and research facility at 515 E. 71st Street. The new 35,000 sq. ft. facility situated on floors 2, 4, and 6 through 8 features several laboratories designed specifically to accommodate the safe handling of organic chemicals, tissue cultures, and live animals.

Key to the project’s overall success was Turner’s ability to upgrade the space’s MEP infrastructure while ensuring the integrity of sensitive laboratory equipment. In this capacity, the project team implemented several Lean Construction practices, such as isolating the most active work areas throughout the project’s lifecycle. As a result, extensive infrastructure upgrades, such as the installation of new chillers, HVAC, and life systems, were completed without adversely affecting the numerous “clean rooms.”
