St.Michael's Hospital - Keenan Research Centre

The Keenan Research Centre project at St. Michael’s Hospital’s Li Ka Shing building is composed of a 22,000 sq. ft. renovation, lab (clean and cold room), office, and support space build-out. The facility remained fully operational within the busy urban facility. The space includes programming for the Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Science Technology (iBEST), a partnership between St Michael’s Hospital and the Toronto Metropolitan University. The connection to the hospital via the bridge over Shuter Street allows researchers to apply their discoveries to patients, for so-called “bench-to bedside” research. The partnership strives to bridge the mutual strengths of biomedical research and education to develop innovative solutions to advance patient care. Additional scopes of work included dry and wet labs, a clean room, the redistribution of electrical systems including fire alarms, security and IT and mechanical systems including medical gas lines, the vacuum, thermostats, plumbing (hot and cold water, pipes, drains), interior partitions and other finishes. The scope of work is also inclusive of a 2,000 sq. ft. “incubator” that specializes in the development and commercialization of innovative biomechanical products to care for and treat patients.
