This new world-class library features a brand new, 42,000 sq. ft. two-story building with community-focused spaces, a teaching kitchen, maker space and teen library area, and community room. The library creates a civic space that serves as a crossroads between the town’s commercial, educational, and residential districts.
This new world-class library for the Town of New Canaan serves as the Crown Jewel of the Town. The Town worked for over 10 years to develop a transformational space that amplifies the library experience for families—connecting people, perspectives, and information to help build a more engaged, inclusive, and empathetic world.
The project features a brand new, 42,000 sq. ft. two-story building with community-focused spaces, a teaching kitchen, maker space and teen library area, as well as a community room. Located on a prominent gateway site, the library creates a civic space that serves as a crossroads between the town’s commercial, educational, and residential districts.
“Robots, bionics, and autonomous machines have enormous potential to make construction safer and more efficient. We are actively pursuing solutions that leverage these technologies to help the company build smarter.” – Turner’s Director of Innovation, Jennifer Downey
Dusty Robotics is a company that specializes in robotic layout technology. The robot bridges the gap between BIM and the field - printing layout plans directly from the latest digital drawings - and eliminating many of the manual steps associated with the transfer of building plans to onsite crews. Dusty integrates with technologies that are commonly utilized in our more traditional layout practices, like Total Station and BIM360, to provide layout that can be easily checked.
Our Turner Project Team utilized Dusty on this project for partition and soffit layout; replacing 90% of the layout typically done via traditional methods. Our Connecticut VDC Group integrated the coordinated MEFP model into Dusty’s layout allowing us to print wall-duct penetration sizes/locations at the same time the partitions are printed.
Additional features printed included door openings & door numbers, glazing locations, ceilings heights, partition types and the capability to print in different colors & line types. These benefits cut our partition layout time significantly.
This project features many firsts, including the above-mentioned robotic technology, cutting-edge sustainability features such as the use of ground glass pozzolan, and renewable energy generation. The project also led the charge on the material sourced investigation.
