The Turner School of Construction Management (TSCM) is a hallmark program within the Community and Citizenship Department. Since 1969, it has served as one of the primary catalysts in creating direct connections to Underutilized Business Enterprise (UBE) networks and offering intentional engagement with firms, to help them become profitable, sustainable, and successful companies.
The pandemic and COVID-19 greatly impacted the ability of business units around the country to offer these teachings for nearly two years.
In the spring of 2022, the Maryland business unit safely held their first in-person TSCM and it was a huge success. One organization, a woman-owned firm out of Prince George’s County, Maryland, was first introduced to Turner during this session of TSCM and utilized the content and internal connections provided by the school.
“The Turner school was great and the knowledge provided throughout the classes was enormously helpful for our company's future. Mainly we learned about how Turner works and how they manage their construction projects, from the start to the end. Most importantly I got a chance to meet many of the Turner Baltimore office team and other class participants from different companies,” said Madhusha Sarathchandra, Director of Business Development of Global Consulting, Inc. “Turner went an extra step to provide me online access to the class for one week which I couldn't attend in person due to health reasons. With the relationship we built with the Turner staff from the Baltimore office, Global Consulting Inc. managed to bid and win the IH scope for their project started within a few months after the completion of Turner School. There are a lot of pros to attending this class such as networking and building a relationship with the Turner staff, enormous knowledge about construction management, etc. I strongly recommend Turner School to project managers who provide construction-related services.”
Within three months of graduation, this firm won its first contract with Turner.
“This was amazing to witness and truly indicative of the incredible work done by our people in Maryland, especially when it comes to building up the construction industry and Underrepresented Business Enterprises through TSCM,” said Manny Sampson, Community & Citizenship Program Specialist, Turner Mid-Atlantic.
