Georgia Tech - EcoCommons Living Building Sector

A Centerpiece for Non-Structured Activities to Improve Campus Life

Georgia Institute of Technology's EcoCommons Living Building Sector project included the creation of a performance landscape and passive 8-acre greenspace that follows the originally naturally occurring stream paths of the region before the urbanization of the campus. The EcoCommons consists of three living landscape areas to meet the goals of Learn, Engage and Reflect.

Spaces to learn, engage and reflect

Georgia Tech is practicing thoughtful stewardship of the land by joining it with smart infrastructure. Sensors embedded throughout the EcoCommons support ecological education and research and demonstrate Georgia Tech's commitment to fostering sustainability initiatives into the 21st century.

Project features include the installation of a visibly exposed stream channel through the heart of the EcoCommons to mimic historical water flow within the valley and to reduce stormwater runoff by 50 percent. Turner's efforts included grading, drainage, and installing stormwater management systems, including cisterns and an irrigation system; hardscape work, including multi-use paths consisting of concrete, brick, and asphalt; wayfinding signage, solar-powered lighting, site amenities, and landscaping.
