Turner partnered with Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a 250,000-sq. ft. vertical expansion to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, one of the nation's leading children's hospitals.
Designed and programmed to dramatically advance the size and scope of the hospital’s pediatric healthcare programs, the project included the addition of four new floors on top of the hospital’s existing nine-story structure.
The first and second levels of the four-story overbuild accommodate state-of-the-art inpatient floors and an expansion of the existing penthouse as an intermediate mechanical level. The new patient rooms are universally designed to accommodate the neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, cardiac, and acute care patients. Two floors remain as shelled space for future expansion efforts.
The project included the relocation of a helipad, the vertical expansion of nine existing elevators, the addition of two new elevators in the existing building, renovation of the main lobby entrance, enlargement of the oxygen tank area, and upgrades to the electrical and mechanical systems.
The 10th and 11th floors of Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, which were built out as part of this project, are LEED Silver® certified.
The complexities of completing new construction on top of an existing building are significant, but the complexities of building on top of a running hospital are life critical. The project team overcame significant logistical, mechanical, and technological challenges, resulting in the project celebrating zero operational interruptions.
