New Construction
HOK
Turner and joint-venture partner Trotter Construction, in association with Nubian Transport Management, provided construction management services for the landside area development covering approximately 1,126 acres at the Indianapolis Airport.
This project's scope included the demolition of the old airport control tower, construction of the pad for the apron and terminal, and major storm/deicing run-off structures under the apron. This also included all construction beyond the limits of the terminal and apron which encompassed the mass earthwork, taxiways, roads and service roads, bridges, holding and equalization structures, construction of utility infrastructure for water, sewerage, power, data cable backbone, deicing and fueling systems, ground service equipment facilities, surface parking, rental car facilities, and the massive parking garage.
As work was being performed in the middle of an active airport, the project team coordinated daily with the existing Airport operations staff and many other organizations including local power and water providers, regulatory groups that control water and sewer run-off, Department of Transportation, FAA, TSA and Department of Environmental Management.
In sheer volume, the cast-in-place concrete garage is twice as large as the terminal at 2.5 million sq. ft. In addition to more than 5,900 public parking spaces, accessed via speed and helical ramps, the garage includes on-site rental car services. The garage’s first level houses the airport’s rental car operations, the Ground Transportation Center, and 1,200 rental car spaces.
A Quick Turn Around Facility was built for rental car agencies’ use in washing, prepping, and refueling vehicles. The scope of work for this project component included the complete QTA buildings including the concrete aprons adjacent to the buildings, canopies, slab, island, and all utilities at the fuel dispenser pumps.
The project scope also included the underground fuel storage tanks including the tie-down pads, filling apertures, valves, and alarms.
